Limits of Assumed Knowledge Anonymous 12/03/2019 (Tue) 04:32:24 No.6101 [Reply] [Last]
While games might require a varying degree of attention and persistence, almost everything I've played has only really one requirement in order to understand what to do; language. Even so, it's probably possible to experiment through the majority of games with a language barrier reasonably well that aren't too dependent on words like RPGs.

This isn't a criticism of game design, but it's different with things like a series of textbooks, where you need to read one in order to understand the next. I'm curious to know if there are any games where it is imperative that you're knowledgeable about something that exists outside the game in order to progress within it. Something like the Grail scene from Indiana Jones, where it isn't really solved by cleverness, but by knowing that Jesus was a carpenter.

wizardry hardly even counts because its ridles were not about irl knowledge but about thinkning in a very specific way that makes no fucking sense to mortal humans

might and magic was the better series. it had cool technomagic aesthetics and nice ladies
>>6484
Well, Wizardry 4, specifically, actually did require knowing something from one of the earlier games, if I remember right. I dunno. Never played it.

La-Mulana has a somewhat mean puzzle that requires the player to have read the manual. Not a lot of people even realized there was an English-translated manual, back in the day.

speaking of walking sims:
just finally discovered that the long dark existed a month ago. had written it off as it was a """"survival""" meme, during peak hype of that shit, and also the gameplay looked like it was basically just canadian walking sim 2016

turned out ded wrong tho
is actually a great game and totally toaster friendly to boot

An interesting coincincedence Anonymous 11/28/2019 (Thu) 03:40:28 No.5138 [Reply] [Last]
I've just realised that both the Tony Hawk Underground games and the NFS Underground games, while good, suffered from going over the top with their settings compared to the more grounded and consistent if lower on spectacle earlier games in their series. Also in both cases they tend to be the ones held up as the greatest in the series because they sold shifted significantly more copies than previous games aka Morrowind syndrome.

Clearly subtitling a game with Underground, a name that inherently sounds like a 13 year old's idea of cool, dooms it to this fate.

Yes. Worth deciding if you want the original (but patched) game or the FOSS port Arx Libertatis. Differences summary here https://wiki.arx-libertatis.org/Changes_from_Arx_Fatalis

Its sort of prototype Dark Messiah. Had a pretty cool magic system requiring you to learn runes and draw them with the mouse when casting.

Although the Paladins were once loved and revered throughout the lands of Lordaeron, they have since fallen on hard times. The entire Order of the Silver Hand was disbanded for refusing to kill innocent townsfolk who were believed to be contaminated by the dreaded Undead plague. Disenfranchised and driven from their former homes, the Paladins still work selflessly to protect humanity from the gnawing jaws of evil. Empowered by the Light, these mighty warriors brandish both warhammer and holy fire in battle against all who would trample the meek and innocent.

Been trying to one-life clear Metal Slug 5 again lately. This boss really grinds my gears.
To play without training wheels? Sure.
I tried playing POSTAL 2, going full pacifist mode in Hestonworld difficulty (if my memory doesn't fail me). Problem was when Wednesday came, Postal Dude gets kidnapped by a bunch of rednecks (I mean, what do you expect from a game made by (((them))) ). He then has to fight his way out of the underground factory filled with those rednecks but with weapons while you are fucking empty-handed. Don't forget, I'm trying to NOT kill anyone in this run. Eventually I just gave up.
>>3842
>Self-imposed
But Postal 2 has rankings that will acknowledge you being fully pacifist. It's technically not self-imposed.
Is it really a self-imposed challenge when the game is all about choosing your own difficulty and loadout.

I've been playing Brigador a lot and I can either pilot a huge mech with a naval cannon or a small tuk-tuk with a machine gun and a mortar.

Things that should be the Standard Anonymous 11/28/2019 (Thu) 01:53:14 No.5123 [Reply] [Last]
Are there features, mechanics, and design philosophies that you feel almost every game should incorporate and if so, why?

"Immersive simulator" is a pretentious name, but it surprises me that more developers don't borrow from these games more, which successfully tell linear stories and are more satisfying because of how good the level design is despite having worse gameplay than more recent games. Every developer should be forced to sit down and play Deus Ex until they understand how good it is and re-evaluate how open-ended they want things, whether it's opening up levels or reducing their scope in favor of centralizing the content more. I'm convinced if there was a single improvement that could be made in the industry, this would be the most important.

For menus, when you press "up" at the top or "down" at the bottom, you need to come out the other side, instead of staying where you are. Why is this so hard to get, I wonder.

Spread Bomb; Force Field

After it manages to land on the ground, sure. Meanwhile it falls directly down below your ship where there's rarely any enemies, doing nothing. The angled drop on regular missiles is far more important than photon's advantages at first glance.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Anonymous 10/12/2019 (Sat) 05:41:14 No.2061 [Reply] [Last]
If anyone here hasn't played this game, you are missing out on a fucking masterpiece. For those of you who do play this game, let's talk strategy a bit. Or mechanics. Could someone explain to me how exactly tech beelining works? It's hard to make the techs you want appear on the selection screen even if you have all the prereqs.

And just for the sake of spurring some conversation, what factions have you been messing around with and what do you think of them? Been messing with Peacekeepers and despite their lackluster appearance they are a surprisingly comfortable faction to play as. You can ignore drone problems pretty easily, bigger bases makes a major difference if you go former crazy and make bases that grow fast, and they are really good at getting golden ages if you rush a fast Human Genome Project. Peacekeepers pretty much feels like a faction with no real weaknesses and a surprising amount of hidden strengths, between planetary governorship, bigger bases, lower psych needs, and easy golden ages.

For future reference, visit http://goggamespc7v6z5e.onion/ for GOG downloads (this is a Tor hidden service, fyi, so either use Tor or use a clearnet gateway to access it).

Fan Patches:
Scient's Classic Patch: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=365
Kyrub's Classic AI Patch: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=260
Yitzi's Alien CrossFire Patch: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=352
PRACX: https://github.com/DrazharLn/pracx/releases/

Please note that the top three patches all replace each other, so just install what you want. Kyrub's AI patch is recommended after regular SMAC on Transcend is too easy (includes older version of scient patch). PRACX is a resolution fixer which will probably work wonders for preventing crashes if you're having any. It installs on top of existing patches so just install it last.

PS: OP contains one of the best strategy guide pdfs for SMAC.
>>5186
To be exact, either use Scient or Kyrub for Classic (aka SMAC) and just use Yitzi for Alien CrossFire (aka SMAX). Then install PRACX.

Also, you are strongly encouraged to play Classic mode first. SMAX will ruin your first impression since it sorta brings down the quality of the game with the new crap it throws in.
>>5186
cheers, will jump into vanilla without reading anything and see what's what

What is your opinion on this series? Did it ever work in 3d, was the series flawed from the start, do have any unpopular opinions?

Seems that it did good enough on SA1 except when playing as Big the Cat, playing as him was objectively shit, on SA2 was quite bad only the sonic/shadow sections being good enough which is 1/3 of the game, the rest is from bad to just shit, SA2 Battle seems to only improve the graphics just a bit and make worse what was already bad.

Sonic the Werehog was... ok? not that great, not that bad... exept for the story but... it's a Sonic game, who plays those games for the story?
CD is the best 2D game. 3 & Gay is an eyesore to look at. Adventure 1 is the closest Sega ever got to a good 3D game. Adventure 2 and everything after it is shit. Mania could have been good if it didn't rehash the fuck out of the old games. 90% of all problems with Sonic games after Adventure 2 that aren't related to technical incompetence have in some way been suggested by the fans, the Sonic series is proof that you should focus on making what you think makes your games good instead of what your fans think makes your games good because your fans don't know what they want.
