My favorite kind of player character is someone you can connect with, not in the storyfag "I can relate to this character" way but in the sense that your actions as the player fit and interpret whoever you're playing as. Doomguy is almost a player avatar but still shows a personality which fits what you're doing, and Mario is vague enough that you can do all kinds of shit in his games and still be in character. This gets harder when games aim for more complex characters and storylines, and this connection usually gets thrown out the window pretty fast in favor of non-vidya storyfag shit. I guess there's also games where the player character is an ideal you connect with by getting gud, like Dante or Ryu from Ninja Gaiden. Have you played any games which handle this player connection/interpretation thing well even with more complex characters? The big one that's coming to my mind now is Deus Ex and I wouldn't call J.C. Denton nuanced, fun as he is.

Do you guys feel that Spec Ops did a decent job at trying to give the player PTSD because I didn't really get particularly disturbed by it, probably because I wouldn't have my mind broken by it. Its most impactful moments like the White Phosphorus scene was constructed as a painting and it was literally turned into one at the end, so it all felt extremely forced.

Quitting a piece of entertainment media the audience (presumably) paid for half way through is not an actual option. Pretending that is like claiming movies are interactive because the viewer can stop watching anytime and pretend rest of the movie never happens. At the very least they could have added a gameplay feature for giving up. Something like in one of those Far Crys were you get the good ending right from the start if you just wait a moment like you are asked to. Only moment in Spec Ops that really got a emotional reaction out of me was the part where a raghead jumps out in a tight corridor during a firefight, and the game doesn't even acknowledge it if you jump the gun and shoot the bint. I imagine the white phosphorus would have had an impact on me if I had chosen to do it because I couldn't get gud enough to fight off the whole army, instead of being scripted into it.

The worst part is that even if you could fight through it you'd still fuck over the civilians they were protecting and the game would continue almost exactly the same from there. Also notice how this is the forced choice everyone fixates on and complains about, not the more destructive act of helping the CIA destroy the city's water supply later on. It's because the game pretends to give you a choice like it does many times before and afterwards, but arbitrarily bullshits you out of it in a very unconvincing way. It's ultimately a bad level design and optimization problem (apparently the devs had severe performance problems with that firefight on consoles) that they got uppity about post-release, which sticks out when it does so much well.

ITT we post actual good videos and articles about video games and try to sift through the mountains of """content""" that has ruined most people's ability to find something that isn't a soy grimace or a nu-Let's Play. No e-celebs, no surrogate friends - just good examples of people discussing the history, technology, and/or design of video games. Basically, I got curious and wanted to know if there's more games that copy practically everything about IPs that haven't seen a sequel and likely never will in a long time, except they're made by indie developers with a completely new IP that is a clear homage to the original. I'll give you some examples of what I mean: Pizza Tower, which is a Wario Land clone without lives and an emphasis on speed and getting a high rank Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, obviously Castlevania FAST RMX, F-Zero without the comic book characters Do you know of any more of them that are actually passable-to-great?

About eight years ago, Watch Dogs was presented to the world as a revolutionary title to lead the charge into the 8th generation, demonstrating both graphical excellence and levels of environmental interactivity not seen in AAA productions. It's eventual release in 2014 showed that it was anything but, having what should have been the most significant backlash that generation had it not been for multiple other studios vying for the prestigious title of Most Synonymous with Elephant Shit. So, Watch Dogs isn't the absolute worst as much as it should be, but despite all things it has not only gotten one sequel but TWO of them with their most recent one positioning itself similarly to the first as that same torchbearer to lead in the next PlayStation and Xbox into another seven or so years of mediocrity. Why is Ubisoft so committed to developing this trashfire further? It failed as a GTA V competitor, it will fail as a Cyberpunk 2077 competitor, it's never seemed to be that popular among normalfags, it's arguably the game is the one that set the sour tone for the current consoles, so why are they so insistent to this idea when they refuse to do anything interesting with it?

I always see this as an excuse, but I need to see the numbers. I think that the success of the iPhone caused a seismic shift in business philosophy because the entire design of the phone was about changing functionality into accessibility, and with widespread user adoption comes mobile developers who design around the limitations imposed on them and eventually comes the second generation of developers about 10 years later that fail to realize this form of development was based around necessity and are now seeking to apply it in every way they can. For phones, its more or less fine because they've taken on a meaning of convenience and it's fine having a distracting game to occupy yourself for all of five minutes, but mobile game design then became conflated with console and PC game design as a result of these second generation developers. Of course there's going to be a group of people who want to zone out, but Ubisoft is making an error in judgement in believing that the market for those who want to be even slightly challenged is smaller.

I want to get into sim racing to improve my sense of driving and car handling. From a quick search the most current sim racers seem to be Assetto Corsa, Project Cars 2, rFactor 2, Iracing and Raceroom. If any of you are into sim racing, what racing games can you recommend for realistic physics? Some other questions I have: >Is a console controller with analog triggers a decent enough starting point if you can't budget for a wheel? >Can you point to any online resources to get started with sim racing? >How is the AI for single player? >Would you recommend any community made content for the games? >Is there DLC that you would consider necessary or good to have? >Do the games also handle non-paved roads well or should I consider a rally sim for that? If so any recommendations?

If so any recommendations? iRacing handles dirt tracks pretty well and I think further improvements are coming. The tracks are as close to the real thing as possible because they use lasers to map them. No idea if the others are any good because I haven't played them. Before getting into iRacing the last Sim racer I'd played was GT3. I don't suggest any GT game past that one. My friend plays Forza and it's supposed to be pretty good but you'll be stuck on Xbox or Windows 10. If you're looking to become an actual race car driver in the future just stick to iRacing. That's where all the real drivers are and they're moving up players to actual cars now. Several series sponsor drivers on there and you can win good money if you manage to work up to the higher ranks. It is a bit costly though and I wouldn't suggest playing it without

Before I got hurt I drove in two dirt divisions and did enduro. Before I moved into cars I drove go-karts. I've been riding motorcycles since I was four years old and driving manual/cars since I was 6 years old. >2. If you can prove it tell me how to get into it What do you want to drive and how old are you now? That will make a big difference. A general answer would be getting involved with a race shop. You don't have to be good at working cars just sleeping the floors and hauling tires around will get your foot in the door. If you want to jump straight into driving I suggest getting into go-kart racing starting out. No matter what kind of racing you start with expect to be spending most of your money on it. That's why iRacing is so popular even with professionals because it allows you to train without having to sink all the money into tires/gas/engines/staff/track fees etc.

If you're in EU/UK they have a similar division but the name escapes me at this time. It's basically a division made up of cheap front wheel drive cars like Honda Civics. They're probably the cheapest actual car you can start in. You're still going to dump thousands into getting started and thousands into keeping it going. If you are going to build and drive the car expect to spend 6 days a week in the shop, 1 day racing, and if you're lucky you'll get it back home without damaging something major. You're going to go broke keeping tires on the thing no matter what you do. You can use the same set of tires multiple times but don't expect to run anywhere but last place.

I don't think that most mechanics that are employed by games are inherently bad, but it is apparent that most developers have little concern as to how functional they are while in game. By implementation, I don't mean that the mechanic itself is flawed specifically or in a general sense, but the method of interacting with it or how its used or unused by developers. Hunger systems being nothing but burden, broken control schemes, anything that makes the game frustrating because you understand that it has the potential to be good. A more specific example would be Starfox Zero, which uses both the television and Wii U gamepad to play with the television showing a third person view and the gamepad showing a first person view. The television reticle is offset for the purpose of forcing players to look at the gamepad to aim instead of adjusting missions in a way that it compliments both camera angles. It's purposefully broken in an attempt to create something that would otherwise be difficult to accomplish without a second screen.

Body part damage in any game except monster hunter and mechwarrior. Dark souls 3 are the worst at this. The only body part damage is damage to the ass of Dancer(one of bosses), if you hit her ass it wiggles around. It is a good ass, but such fucking misuse of a mechanic. Technically something similar was in planescape torment. If you die, in the end of the game a shadow will await you for each death. This could be a cool inclusion in ending or just populating the world of shadows of you, like in roguelikes with morgue where you can meet your previous incarnations/their graves.

Curse-Rotted Greatwood, High Lord Wolnir, and Deacons of the Deep require weakpoint destruction to beat, Yhorm the Giant takes normal damage if you shoot him in the face, Lothric can be hit when he's on Lorian's back, Stray Demon's legs can be destroyed, headshots deal extra damage, melee hits on the heads of some large creatures deal extra damage, Harald Legion knights take extra damage from plunging attacks, Salyvahn's beasts drop to the ground and start flailing around if you stun&riposte them. >Body part damage in any game except monster hunter and mechwarrior I know at least Dragon's Dogma and I'm not even into action games.
