MGSV is not a damn retelling of anything, it is a desolate, barren game by design. Kojima wanted to convey how exhausted and collapsed everything is in it, "phantom pain." That is literally what it is, and it sucks because it was meant to suck.
MGS1 was period piece of early videogames. MGS2 was Kojima going 2deep4u, in a good way. MGS3 was Kojima getting pissed off that people didn't appreciate his 2deep4u (MGS2 was kind of hated in its time). So, he made a deliberately superficial game in MGS3 similar in style to MGS1. Everyone loved it, as he predicted, so he shit out a true turd with MGS4, but he wanted to make it a turd it was authentic still despite being shit.
